Podcast Studio Recording Guide

Welcome to the 3-Step Podcast Studio!

The Edge Studio SM7B microphones are connected via a splitter and ready to go for Podcasting. You record your session using the Tascam Mixcast 4 either on the mixer using your SD card or an audio application on a laptop.

Step 1: Get Ready at Your Station

  • Sit comfortably in front of your assigned SM7B microphone.
  • Position the mic 6–8 inches from your mouth, slightly off to the side (this reduces plosive “P” and “B” pops).
  • Speak normally toward the microphone.

Step 2: Put on Headphones

  • Plug the studio headphones into the Mixcast 4 headphone jack.
  • Adjust the headphone volume so you can clearly hear yourself and others.

Step 3: Choose Your Recording Method

Option A – Record Directly to SD Card (Recommended – Simplest)

  1. Insert your formatted SD card into the Mixcast 4 slot.
  2. If prompted on the touchscreen, tap Yes.
  3. Press the large red Record button on the Mixcast 4.

Option B – Record to Your Laptop via USB-C

For Mac Users (No extra driver needed):

The Mixcast 4 is USB Class Compliant on macOS. It works immediately as a 14-channel audio interface.

  1. Connect the USB-C cable from the Mixcast 4 to your Mac.
  2. macOS will automatically recognize the device.
  3. Recommended Software Options:
    • Tascam Podcast Editor (Free from Tascam) – Best for simple podcast workflows.
    • GarageBand (Free, pre-installed on most Macs) – Great for beginners.
    • Adobe Audition – Professional option with advanced editing.
  4. In your chosen software:
    • Select “Mixcast 4” as the audio input and output device.
    • You will see up to 14 input channels:
      • Channels 1–2: Stereo Mix
      • Channels 3–6: Individual Microphone channels (ideal for multitrack)
      • Additional channels for sound pads, USB input, etc.
    • Arm the tracks you want to record and start your session.

Option C – Windows Laptop

Tascam Podcast Editor (Free from Tascam) can be downloaded from the Tascam website and used without the ASIO Driver.  Note: All other DAW software will require the ASIO Driver and proper settings selections to function as a true multitrack recorder

  • Download and install the Tascam ASIO Driver from the official Tascam website.
  • Select the Tascam Mixcast 4 ASIO driver in your DAW program for full multitrack access.
  • For Adobe Audition, go to Edit -> Preferences -> Audio Hardware
  • Make sure that ASIO is selected as the Device Class so that you see Mixcast 4 ASIO Driver displayed for Default Input and Output.

Step 4: Sound Check & Start Recording

  • Speak into your mic and watch the level meters on the Mixcast 4 touchscreen. Blue/White = Good | Red = Too loud (avoid clipping).
  • When ready, press Record (SD card) or start recording in your software/DAW.
  • You may use the sound pads for intros, music, or effects if enabled.

Step 5: Record Your Podcast

Speak naturally. The SM7B dynamic microphones focus on your voice and effectively reject background noise.

Step 6: Stop Recording

  • Press the Stop button on the Mixcast 4 (or stop in your software).
  • For SD card: Safely remove your card after stopping.

Step 7: Save & Clean Up

  • Transfer files from your SD card or save your DAW project and back them up.
  • Return headphones to their proper place.
  • Tidy the area and let the Media Center staff know you are finished.

Quick Tips

  • Format your SD card in the Mixcast 4 for best results.
  • Avoid bumping the table or microphone while recording.
  • Do not adjust gain/knobs yourself — ask for help if levels are off.
  • The Wheatstone Blade handles the live feed. The Mixcast 4 is for your recording.
  • Mac users: Use GarageBand or Tascam Podcast Editor for the easiest experience.
  • For best multitrack results, record to individual channels when using a DAW.
