The ratio of the width of a picture to the height. NTSC standard definition video has a 4:3 aspect ratio. High definition video is generally 16:9 aspect ratio. Aspect ratio may also be expressed as a number with 1 as a base value, such as 4:3 is the same as 1.33:1 and 16:9 is the same as 1.77:1. Most modern films are said to have an aspect ratio of 2.35:1.
