Here are a few highlights of projects that we completed over the Summer:
- Renovated the Master Editing/Surround Sound Suite on the first floor, Room 115.
o Facilities installed a new, full hinge on the 115 door, so it opens/closes easily now.
o 115 is now basically a duplicate of the surround sound studio we installed last summer in 101B, but instead of the dual touchscreen Slate Raven console, there is a single, ultra-wide curved monitor.
o You can raise up the curved monitor to reveal the center speaker if you are editing surround sound in that room.
o We made use of a very nice editing desk that had been donated to us by Ntara in 2019.
- Added 4 new Mac minis to the Submarine (Room 105), for a total of 5 open editing stations in that room for our students.
o These were much needed replacements for our outdated general use Mac Pros. The new computers are compatible with 4K and 6K editing over the network through their 10Gbps ethernet connectivity to our Avid Nexis server. They also have multicore processors and boosted RAM to make working with high resolution video much smoother. These new minis add to the new Mac Studios and Mac Mini’s purchased last semester for our general use spaces like 101B and 115.
o We removed the Yamaha mixing board, and added a workstation at that desk with a dual-monitor setup and speakers.
o We added a narrow table on the left side of the room as an open area students could come in and bring their laptops – bringing the total potential workstations in that room to 7. We added a power strip and a monitor with a loose HDMI cable to the table, in case anyone wanted a 2nd monitor when using their laptop.
o This room is slated to stay open from 8:30am to whenever the lab monitor leaves for the day (usually later in the evening). The hope is that students will use this room to edit outside of class and not have to clear out of the 103 lab before the next class starts.
- Replaced 3 of our aging Tungsten main lights in the studio with LED lighting, so we are now only reliant on these new LED lights, and a bank of Fluorescent tube lights – no more Tungsten is required for general use lighting.
o This should help make the studio safer and more inviting for student use, as LEDs only put out a fraction of the heat that Tungsten lights do.
o This should also significantly reduce our electricity consumption, as these LED lights replaced two 1000-watt lights and one 2000-watt light.
o If you would like an overview of the new lights in the studio, please contact Tim Altonen.
- Sent out a large surplus shipment, which made a lot more room in the prop area by the loading dock. Retrieving the large set pieces and news desk should be much easier now.
