The Submarine 105
105A is now set up with a new Mac Studio (same model as 103 instructor station). It’s a significant upgrade from the Macs in the lab, and also that room has a 10GB connection to Nexis, which makes transferring and working off Nexis much smoother and faster. It also has the updated Adobe software, Pro Tools (version that is used in the lab), Final Draft, and the Maxon software loaded – essentially a copy of all the software we have in the 103 lab. We also hooked up a USB Mic in there, and the AMP is now connected straight to the computer via the headphone jack, so we were able to get rid of the old sound board, and now you can control the volume coming out of the speakers by just turning the volume knob on the AMP itself (located in the rack to the left of the computer desk). If a student wants to use headphones, just plug them into the AMP (using a ¼ to 1/8 adapter (one is in there now but may not last)).
We have also temporarily installed a Mac Studio in the third spot in the bank of computers in 105. We'll swap this computer with the new Surround Sound studio once the semester is over.
Here is a list of the new software we’ve purchased:
-Final Draft 12: Script-writing software. The license is tied to the lab computers in 103 and 105, but students can download an 18-week “semester-long trial” here to use the software at home during the Scriptwriting class (tied to their .edu account).
-Maxon One: Video Editing Plugins and Software. This includes the Red Giant Suite (Plural Eyes, etc), Cinema 4D, and a plethora of other add-ons, visual effects, and programs used with Adobe Premiere and After Effects (full list here). We have 20 “Floating Licenses”, which means that any student who is on the approved license list can sign in and use the software at any time, but only 20 users on that list can use the software at the same time. Basically, the license will turn on and off for the user when they sign in/ sign out. This allows the student to use the software in class and at home. It would also theoretically allow more than 20 users on the approved list, but, only 20 users would have access at any given time. Jake VanHuss is in charge of licenses for all users and will be primarily using this software for classes that are heavy on After Effects.
-Studio Binder: Pre-Production software. This software allows you to ingest scripts from Final Cut Pro and generate production documents like Call Sheets, Breakdowns, and shot lists (video tour). This software has been the hold-up in talking about new software, as we are still currently trying to finalize our account and licenses. Apparently there was some kind of issue with payment in the pipeline that is causing the delay, but is supposed to be resolved very soon. After that, we’ll know what kind of license structure we have, but Jake VanHuss will also be in charge of the licenses (if it is not tied to the computers).
-Shotdeck: Search-able database of movie images. This software (web-based) allows the user to search thousands of images from TV and Film to aid in storyboarding and building "look books" for their own projects. We have 20 licenses for this software as well, but there are only 20 seats available and is not a "floating license" like Maxon. Jake VanHuss will manage users and add/delete to the user list.
